Terminology FIBC Bags

Introduction

Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), also known as jumbo bags, bulk bags, super sacks, or tonne bags, are industrial containers made of flexible fabric designed for storing and transporting dry, flowable products. They are commonly used in various industries, including agriculture, construction, chemicals, and food.

Common FIBC Terminology

  • Safe Working Load (SWL): The maximum weight that an FIBC can safely carry without damage. SWL is typically expressed in kilograms (kg) and is a critical factor when selecting and using FIBCs.
  • Static Lifting Load: The maximum weight that an FIBC can withstand when lifted vertically. Static lifting load is usually higher than SWL, as it accounts for the additional stress caused by lifting.
  • Dynamic Lifting Load: The maximum weight that an FIBC can withstand when lifted and moved. Dynamic lifting load is typically lower than SWL, as it accounts for the additional stress caused by movement.
  • Fabric Weight: The weight of the fabric used to make the FIBC, typically expressed in grams per square meter (gsm). Fabric weight is an indicator of the strength and durability of the FIBC.
  • Discharge Spout: A spout or opening at the bottom of the FIBC used to discharge the contents. Discharge spouts can be various types, including butterfly valves, pinch valves, and spout covers.
  • Liner: An additional layer of material placed inside the FIBC to protect the contents from contamination or moisture. Liners are commonly used for food-grade and pharmaceutical applications.
  • Anti-Static: Refers to FIBCs that have been treated to reduce static electricity. Anti-static FIBCs are important for handling flammable or explosive materials.
  • UV Protection: Refers to FIBCs that have been treated to protect against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV protection is important for FIBCs that will be exposed to sunlight for extended periods.

FIBC Types

  • Open Top: FIBCs with an open top for filling and discharging. Open top FIBCs are the most common type.
  • Spout Bottom: FIBCs with a discharge spout at the bottom for easy emptying. Spout bottom FIBCs are ideal for materials that need to be dispensed without opening the top.
  • Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) Bags: FIBCs that are filled and sealed automatically using a packaging machine. FFS bags are efficient for high-volume applications.

Industries that Use FIBCs

  • Agriculture: FIBCs are commonly used to store and transport grains, fertilizers, seeds, and other agricultural products.
  • Construction: FIBCs are used to transport sand, cement, gravel, and other construction materials.
  • Chemicals: FIBCs are used to transport chemicals, resins, and other hazardous materials.
  • Food: FIBCs are used to transport food ingredients, grains, and other food products.

Additional FIBC Terminology

  • Baffle Bag: An FIBC with baffles or internal panels to prevent the contents from shifting during handling.
  • Circular Woven Bag: An FIBC made from fabric woven on a circular loom, resulting in a seamless cylindrical shape.
  • Disposable Bag: An FIBC designed for single-use applications.
  • Linerless Bag: An FIBC without an inner liner.
  • Recyclable Bag: An FIBC that can be recycled after use.
  • UN Certified Bag: An FIBC that meets the United Nations (UN) packaging requirements for hazardous materials.
  • UN Rated Bag: An FIBC that has been tested and assigned a UN hazard rating based on its ability to contain hazardous materials.
